European vegetables are produced, certified, packaged, and distributed in accordance with the strict European Union food safety regulations. In Mediterranean countries, the climate favors the natural production of excellent quality vegetables with high nutritional value.

European producers of agricultural products implement certified quality assurance systems while focusing on the implementation of sustainable practices with a view to maintaining environmental and social sustainability.

In 2023, EU citizens consumed an average of 351 grams of fruit and vegetables per person per day. This falls short of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended 400 grams per day (around 5 portions per day).* Ιt is noted that potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava, and other starchy roots are not included in the category of fruits and vegetables.**

The Vegiterraneo campaign is intended to inform people in Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland about the health benefits of consuming at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day, in line with the WHO recommendations. Over a three-year period, several targeted actions in each of these countries seek to increase the consumption of European fruit and vegetables.
